Khyber at Kala Ghoda is place you should visit at least once!

Over half a decade old and after catering to Royalty and Celebrities from all over the world, Khyber is truly one of the most iconic restaurants in the city.

The moment you stem inside you realize how huge this place actually is. The ambiance takes you back in time instantly, beautiful rustic walls with artwork hand drawn by the famous M.D Husain in 1988, this place will leave you in awe even before you reach your table!

The night I visited, I was surrounded by guests from all over the world. On my left was a table of Japanese businessmen, on another were an elderly Israeli couple and to my right a group of American tourists, such lovely diversity.

They serve some of the best Mughlai food at Khyber. We began with their Seafood Platter which consisted of Reshmi Prawns, Coconut Coriander Prawns, Kali Mirch Rawas, Pomfret and Squid coated in Tawa Masala. The fish was fresh and the Masala was perfect, it was also the first time I tried out Squid with Indian Spices. Worth trying out!

The other starters we had were, Kali Mirch Mutton and Brain Fried Green Masala. The Mutton was tender and beautifully spiced, loved it completely. The brain however was not so impressive, I guess brain loses its soft texture and charm when fried.

For mains we had the Mutton Rara and Chicken Makhanwala, both dishes were delicious, the meat was tender and the spices spot on! We tried out their Reshmi Malai Paratha and Garlic Naan along with our mains which were quite nice too.

We tried out the Milky Way and Firni for desserts, the Milky was mix of Saffron Laddu swimming in a Sea of Condensed Milk and tasted as good as it sounds, worth trying out. The Firni on the other hand was more like Rabdi with its rich creamy texture and sweet taste, but still very delicious.

The Cocktails we tried out here were nice and subtle and something different from the usual gimmicky cocktails many restaurants serve today. We tried out the Rusty Nail, Whiskey sour and a couple of others.

Overall, the food here is good though it could be better in certain areas. The service was good too, though it was a little overwhelming for me to enjoy the meal with 4-5 waiters almost surrounding the table. This even made the place seem cluttered and a little claustrophobic. Almost Perfect is how I would like to describe this iconic restaurant and surely a place you have to visit!

The Best Place to have Asian Food in Dadar with your Family ?

Located right opposite the famous Sena Bhavan, China Bistro in Dadar has always been on my wish list to try out. The ambiance here is quite pleasant and the service is polite and friendly. However, it does seem rather formal where you would want to dine with your family rather than friends.

IMG_3576

I visited this place for dinner and we began with a round of starters and went for the Conpoy Fish Bao and Prawns Har Gao DimSums. The Bao was light and fluffy and the fish filling was delicious! Even the Dimsums were filled with prawns, Perfect and worth trying out!

Impressed with their starters we went for some more, Sea Bass in Cumin BBQ Sauce, BBQ Skewered Prawns and Fire Roasted Mandarin Chicken. What we didn’t expect were the size of the portions, they were huge! The Sea Bass was tender and flavorful, the prawns too were quite nice but the Mandarin Chicken was simply amazing, the best dish we had that day! Tender chicken with a spicy batter coating. Must try!

Filled with the unexpected portion sizes, we skipped mains and went for desserts. The staff suggested we try out something unique so we went for their Chocolate Tsunami and Guava Ice Cream. Chocolate Tsunami is basically a Chocolate Mousse topped off with Hot Chocolate Sauce, tastes good but not quite unique as I expected. The Guava Ice Cream on the other hand was supposed to be a scoop of Guava Ice Cream but turned out to be a Slice of Guava Kulfi with Chili Powder Sprinkled over it. While I like the combination of Guava and Chili, the creamy kulfi flavor spoiled the fun, but still quite nice.

The Cocktails we tried out were Insane Russians which was basically a Black Russian with Vodka and Kahlua, amazing as always! A Peach Bellini, mild and elegant. Irish Mellow, combination of Bailey’s and Bubble Gum Liqueur, not the best combination, I would prefer them separate, also the ice made the drink way to mild. The Mocktails I had were, Apple Basil Martini which was delicious, Apricot Orange Blossom – not a big fan of citrus and milk together and a Blue Berry Passion – a nice drink but a small issue with the glass it is served in, as the berries remain sunk like the Titanic at the bottom of the tall glass!

Overall the food here is amazing, the drinks could have been better and the service and ambiance make it a perfect place to dine with your family.

Dishkiyaaon!!!

Dishkiyaaon! yes that’s the name of this quirky restaurant located on the ground floor of the beautiful Capital Building at BKC. The ambiance lives up to its name with its unique decor, hilarious coasters and so does the food with its Bollywood inspired filmy names.

I visited this place for lunch on a rainy day and it was quite a pleasant experience. We began with a round of soup that was served with lightly toasted bread. We tried out the Yanna Rascalla which was a combination of Minestrone and Rasam, not sure about the minestrone but this soup did taste like Rasam with tiny chunks of Chicken in it, definitely not my favorite dish! However the second soup, Shorba Di Fungi, a Creamy Mushroom soup with Chicken was simply delicious. Thick, creamy and packed with that delicious mushroom flavor, it went well with the garlic toasted bread. Must try if you like Mushroom soups.

Chicken Tikka and Khari maybe two things you never thought of having together but this restaurant seems to like crazy combinations and they definitely got this one right. Their Chicken Tikka Khari was the best dish of the day, tender juicy chicken and soft melt in your mouth Khari, strongly recommended!

IMG_0948

The other appetizers we tried out were Kerela Fish and Chips and Prawns Tandoori Pesto, while the fish was nice and crisp on the outside, it could have been more juicy or moist on the inside, however I did like the spices used on the crust. The prawns were just poor in taste and quality, not recommended!

For mains we ordered Potli Fish and Bhuna Green Goulash and some roti to go along with it. Both dishes were so delicious, nothing was left behind. The Potli Fish comes wrapped in Parchment Paper and served with mildly spiced Masala Rice. The flavors of lemon butter and thyme were mildly evident but if there was a drizzle of lemon butter sauce over the rice, it would have brought this dish to life. The Lamb Goulash Gravy on the other hand was packed with flavor and quite spicy. Perfect! Went well with the Multi-grain Roti served along with it.

Finally for desserts we had an overload of chocolate as we tried out their Chocolate Volcano and Old Monk Chocolate Mouse. Both were equally delicious and chocolaty!

The drinks we tried out were Coffee Sangria – a non alcoholic mix of coffee and orange flavors – not my favorite drink. Paan Banaras wala – Whiskey with Paan and Coconut syrup – unique taste, what I liked most was the flakes of beetle-nut floating on top and cooling your lips each time they touched. Banaras to Bombay – Another delicious blend of Thandai and Dark rum, sadly only 1/3 of the glass was filled. Chai Biscuit Cocktail – Rum and Chai, tastes as bad as it sounds. Last but not lease – A Classic Old Fashioned, the best drink of the lot and a clear example that Classic Cocktails should not be messed with!

Overall we had a lovely time at this restaurant, a great place to unwind and dine with friends!

Traditional Home Style Malwani food at your Workplace ?

Well that’s true if your office is at Peninsula Business Park in Lower Parel. The newly launched Soul Curry Joint offers delicious home style Malvani food right from small bites like Chicken Sukkha, Garlic Prawns, etc to a complete Malvani Thali consisting of Rice, Bhakris, Chicken,  Mutton, Fish, Prawns and the best of all, Sol Kadi!

I dropped by this place a while ago and tried out some of their delicious Malvani Fare and I was quite impressed. Chicken Sukkha and Prawns Garlic were the starters that I went for, both of them were fantastic. The authentic flavors and freshness of ingredients makes you forget that you are inside the food court of a business park.

Next I tried out their chef recommended Bombay Duck and Pomfret Fry, by far the best Fried Fish I have ever had! Tender and fresh on the inside and Crispy on the outside, Delicious and worth a try!

For mains I tried out their Chicken Malvani with Rice Bhakris. Though I am not a fan of bhakris, it went well with the flavor of the chicken gravy.

Finally I tried out their special Sol Kadi, from which the name of the restaurant is derived, a perfect ending, rich and bursting with flavor! Just like the rest of the dishes.

Soul Curry takes cafeteria and food court food to a whole new level, the quality of food is at par with some the best restaurants that I have visited. Strongly Recommended! They even have a wide variety of healthy food and all at very pocket friendly rates.

Haka, Fort

The newly opened Haka is the best thing that could happen for people who love Asian food but are tired of the usual Indo-Chinese fare. Haka has a wide variety of Asian food and is a dream come true for Non-vegetarians as they serve a wide variety of Seafood, Shrimp and Beef as well.

IMG_3128

My visit at Haka was quite nice and it came with its share of ups and downs. The Ambiance here is beautiful however the service was quite poor and kept deteriorating as the evening went by.  The food here was the best part.

We began with a round of mocktails, my favorite Pinacolada and a Cranberry Mojito. Both had a decent flavor but a bit sweet for my taste.

Like any good Asian restaurant, the served us a complementary round of Kimchi Salad and Chili Garlic Sauce/Chutney. A nice way to send those taste buds soaring.

Chicken and Prawns Shumai seemed like a nice way to start the evening and indeed it was, it had a nice mild flavor of Chicken and Prawns. Next we tried out Cocktail Shrimp and Chili Garlic Lamb. The shrimp was one of the best Shrimp dishes I have ever had, even the size and freshness of the shrimp was mind-blowing. Worth a try!

Impressed by their starters we went for another round and ordered Butter Garlic Fish, Golden Fried Prawns and Spicy Chicken Wings. The Fish was mild and delicious though the strong taste of garlic overpowered the fish but still a very nice dish. The Fried Prawns were again huge and fresh, with a nice light and crisp batter coating. The Spicy Chicken Wings lives up to its name, it was spicy and delicious.

We went for another round of drinks and ordered a Oreo Shake and a Fruit Punch, both of which were quite similar to the previous drinks. The Oreo was a bit better than the punch.

Finally before main course we decided to try our luck with a last round of starters and ordered Dynamite Prawns and Chili Lamb. Sadly luck was not on our side, the Shrimp looked amazing with its presentation in a wine glass but didn’t taste fresh at all, a total opposite of the previous shrimp dishes. However the sauce served along it wads nice. Even the beef was very tough and chewy, a complete disappointment.

The staff recommended Fish Sizzler with Pepper sauce was our choice for mains. It was quite interesting to see Asian food served on a sizzler. The fries were the best part of the dish and sadly everything else just failed to impress, the fish was average and the sauce/gravy was just overloaded with peppercorns. Though I like the flavor of pepper, I do not like a mouthful of peppercorns, another disappointment.

IMG_3164

The downhill experience continued with order of Peach Ice Tea and Fresh Lime Soda, the Lime Soda was very sweet and the Ice Tea had sugar crystals at the bottom of my glass. The flavor however was quite nice, just needed a little more effort in the preparation.

Finally the downhill experience climaxed with our order of Caramel Custard which neither looked good as it was crumbled and didn’t taste great either. However our last order of Honey Noodles with Ice Cream was a game changer, it was absolutely delicious and lifted up our fallen hopes. The noodles were crisp and flavorful and went well with the Ice Cream, even the presentation was lovely. Worth a try!

Overall, it was quite a nice experience at Haka, though everything seemed to get out of hand, we ended on a high note. The pocket friendly prices and amazing variety will surely make me come back for more. Worth a Visit!

Summer House Cafe, Lower Parel

Summer House Cafe, just as the name suggests is like a rustic home away from home, where you can unwind and relax with friends. The ambiance inside is huge and beautifully designed. To make things better, they even had a live band performance on the night of my visit. Even the service was polite and friendly, the manger too was keen on explaining his dishes to us. Just Perfect!

eIMG_2324

To beat the summer heat, we began with a round of coolers and tried out the Watermelon Mint Smash and a Yuzu Pineapple Smash. While the watermelon was a bit too mild for my taste, the yuzu with its bitter-sweet and sour taste was spot on refreshing

For starters we tried out the Seafood Basket, Seafood Platter, Golden Fried Bacon Crisps, Char Grilled Tandoori Chicken and their staff recommended Bacon Wrapped Sausages. The Seafood Basket had Deep Fried Calamari Strips, Zesty Fish Fingers and Popcorn Shrimp, the shrimp being the best of the lot. The Seafood Platter had similar preparations but the shrimp was replaced with Cumin and Mint Fish Tikka.

Golden Fried Bacon Strips were deep fried strips of bacon that just crumble in your mouth, Sinfully Delicious! The Grilled Tandoori was quite nice too, huge chunks of Charred Spicy Chicken that goes well with a dash of Lime. The Bacon Wrapped Sausages was by far the best dish of the day, soft and tender with a delicious glaze of BBQ Sauce.

Almost stuffed with starters we went for a round of Smoked Ribs and Pan Seared Sole for our main course. The Ribs were heavenly, soft, tender and delicious. The Pan Seared Sole was even better, cooked in a delicious Butter Garlic Sauce and served alongside creamy Potato Mash and Sauteed Veggies. Strongly Recommended!

Dessert was nothing less than perfect either, we went for the Ultimate Banoffee Pie and their Tiramisu. While the Pie was quite heavy because of the rich toffee sauce, the Tiramisu was very light with a kick of Old Monk. A perfect end to a perfect night!

The Drinks we tried out here were Summer House LIIT, Made in the City, Pineapple Express and Rich Dog, all of them were quite nice but they could have been a little stronger as the flavors were diluted by the amount of ice in them.

Overall, Summer House Cafe is a treat for all your senses and a must visit place to just kick back and relax!

King Chili Chindian Fusion, Kalina

My 50th Blog already and it looks like i found my new favorite place for Chinese food in Kurla. King Chili is a small restaurant serving delicious Asian fare located on the ever busy Kalina-Kurla road. After visiting the other King Chili a few meters away, this place was next on my list and long due. It was totally worth the wait.

Speaking of waiting, I visited this restaurant last Sunday for Dinner with my brother, and we had to wait about 10 minutes before we got our table. Again it was worth the wait, the ambiance is beautiful with its dim lighting and framed traditional artwork hanging on the wall. The restaurant is quite small and tough i wish there was more space between tables, it didn’t matter as the vibrant atmosphere and friendly staff took my mind away from it.

We began with an all time favorite Kung Pao Potatoes for starters and just like other restaurants, the dish here was amazing as well. A must try dish at any Asian Restaurant. What made it extra special is the Caramelized Onion Chutney that they serve here, the bitter sweet taste of the Onions perfectly compliments the sweet, sour and spicy Kung Pao flavor.

eimg_6543

eimg_6549

Quite impressed with first dish we decided to try out something more adventurous and ordered Wasabi Mayo Prawns and Chicken with  Crackling Spinach. Both of the dishes were mindbogglingly delicious and packed with combinations of flavors and textures that I have never tasted before. The Crackling Spinach as the name suggests is made up of Finely Shredded Spinach Leaves that a Fried till Crisp and served with Spicy Chunks of Chicken, Spinach never tasted so delicious and the combination of Soft and Tender Chicken with Crisp Crackling Spinach was simply amazing. The Wasabi Mayo Prawns was even better and the best dish of the day. The Prawns were coated with Mayo and then deep fried which gave it a Crisp Mayo Shell and  then finished of with a drizzle of Wasabi Sauce. Sweet and Savory taste with a kick of  Wasabi in the end. Perfect!

For main course we had Pan Fried Noodles with Hunan Sauce and Seafood toppings. Another great dish, large portion, good enough for two. I loved the combination of crispy fried and soft boiled noodles. Also the seafood toppings were delicious, though it could have been more fresh. And just like the other King Chili restaurant few blocks away, the difference between veg, chicken and seafood variants is just 5-10 rupees and not exponential like many other restaurants where the prices just multiply.

eimg_6550

Overall we had an amazing time, the atmosphere here is excellent with most of diners consisting the North Eastern Community that resides in this part of Kalina and the impeccable manners of the staff that could compete with most of the fine dine restaurants that I have been to. Strongly Recommended and Worth Visiting.
