Taste Bhi, Health Bhi?

Well just like in the case of Maggi Noodles, I’m not sure if the food at Garde Manger is actually healthy but it’s surely tasty! Speaking of which, Garde Manger is beautiful little cafe in Vile Parle, warm and cosy, the ambiance is just perfect! The service too was quick and friendly.

At first sight, barring the desserts, the dishes here were quite unattractive and made want to run for my life as I am a hardcore Non-vegetarian, who doesn’t really care about calories. However I decided to give their food a try instead of heading straight for dessert. Starting off with something safe, their coffee, a Hazelnut Latte and a Cold Coffee. Both were quite nice, the latte was filled with Chocolate sauce, no complaints but not sure if that’s healthy either.

Convinced by their coffee, we went for the Mumbai Local and Mezze Platter. Mumbai Local is like a healthy and premium version of a roadside bhel with fresh ingredients topped off with liquid nitrogen. Now when was the last time your bhelwala used liquid nitrogen? And not only was the smoky presentation a treat for your eyes, the dish tastes good as well, light, delicious and yes… frosty cold! A must try dish! The Mezze Platter was nice as usual, delicious Humus, Couscous, and Tahini Yogurt served with Pita Bread and bread sticks.

Next we went for some Nachos and Pasta, the Nachos did seem quite healthy even the dips served with it were light and delicious! The Spaghetti Pesto Pasta was quite nice too. We ordered their Cold Press Juice and Lemon Ice Tea to go along with these dishes.

By now I realized one way in which their food is healthy… it fills you up quickly and makes you avoid overeating. Almost full, it was finally time for desserts! We ordered a Greek Yogurt and Apple Crumble and a Belgium Chocolate Waffle. The waffle was one of the best I have ever had and it vanished almost instantly. Perfect taste and texture, must try! The Apple Crumble on the other hand was very heavy but equally delicious, it’s sweet and tangy flavor with a hint of Cinnamon has a similar taste to Christmas sweets and made me feel Nostalgic. We ended with an Orange Popsicle which actually had pieces of fruit in it.

Overall the food here is fantastic and absolutely worth visiting. I only wish this place was nearer to home. Strongly Recommended – Health Conscious or Not!

The Best Place to have Asian Food in Dadar with your Family ?

Located right opposite the famous Sena Bhavan, China Bistro in Dadar has always been on my wish list to try out. The ambiance here is quite pleasant and the service is polite and friendly. However, it does seem rather formal where you would want to dine with your family rather than friends.

IMG_3576

I visited this place for dinner and we began with a round of starters and went for the Conpoy Fish Bao and Prawns Har Gao DimSums. The Bao was light and fluffy and the fish filling was delicious! Even the Dimsums were filled with prawns, Perfect and worth trying out!

Impressed with their starters we went for some more, Sea Bass in Cumin BBQ Sauce, BBQ Skewered Prawns and Fire Roasted Mandarin Chicken. What we didn’t expect were the size of the portions, they were huge! The Sea Bass was tender and flavorful, the prawns too were quite nice but the Mandarin Chicken was simply amazing, the best dish we had that day! Tender chicken with a spicy batter coating. Must try!

Filled with the unexpected portion sizes, we skipped mains and went for desserts. The staff suggested we try out something unique so we went for their Chocolate Tsunami and Guava Ice Cream. Chocolate Tsunami is basically a Chocolate Mousse topped off with Hot Chocolate Sauce, tastes good but not quite unique as I expected. The Guava Ice Cream on the other hand was supposed to be a scoop of Guava Ice Cream but turned out to be a Slice of Guava Kulfi with Chili Powder Sprinkled over it. While I like the combination of Guava and Chili, the creamy kulfi flavor spoiled the fun, but still quite nice.

The Cocktails we tried out were Insane Russians which was basically a Black Russian with Vodka and Kahlua, amazing as always! A Peach Bellini, mild and elegant. Irish Mellow, combination of Bailey’s and Bubble Gum Liqueur, not the best combination, I would prefer them separate, also the ice made the drink way to mild. The Mocktails I had were, Apple Basil Martini which was delicious, Apricot Orange Blossom – not a big fan of citrus and milk together and a Blue Berry Passion – a nice drink but a small issue with the glass it is served in, as the berries remain sunk like the Titanic at the bottom of the tall glass!

Overall the food here is amazing, the drinks could have been better and the service and ambiance make it a perfect place to dine with your family.

Authentic Indian Food on the go?

Ever craved for Indian food like Butter Chicken but didn’t have the time to sit down and enjoy it, no problem, Morselo has a solution! With their newly launched ‘Naan Sub’ you can  enjoy delicious Indian dishes while on the move.

Located in the ‘once upon a time popular’ Galleria in Powai, Mosrelo is a tiny eatery that aims to tackle the problem of authentic Indian food on the go. Hence they combined an open sub with popular Indian dishes like Butter Chicken, Paneer Korma, Chicken Kheema and many more. We tried out their Fort Kochi Chicken Pepper Fry, Hazratganjwala Dum Ka Murg and everyone’s favorite GT Road Da Butter Chicken. All of them are loaded with shredded Chicken, perfect ratio of bread to toppings. Our favorite was the Hazratganjwala Dum Ka Murg, worth trying out!

They also serve take away meals or as they like to call it, ‘Rice Packs,’ which is your choice of gravy like Chole, Shahi Paneer, Madras Chicken, etc. served with Pulav Rice and Dilli ki Ram Ladoo. We tried out the London Famous Madras Chicken Gravy which was quite nice and enough to fill you up. We also ordered a side dish Khatte Masaledar Chicken Fingers, which we loved, spicy, tangy and delicious!

If you have been reading closely, you may have noticed that each dish has a location associated with it, that’s because Morselo wants people to know where each of their dishes originated from, their Rice Packs come with a short story about each dish.

We even tried out their drinks which were decent, I liked the water based drinks of Lemon Twist and Orange Chili Tamgo, however the Cold Coffee and Hazelnut Frappe could have been better. I did like their ChocoChip Milkshake that comes loaded with chocolate chips.

Usually I feel that the Chocolate Brownie is the most overused and abused dish in majority of restaurants, they serve dry, boring brownies, sometimes with a scoop of Vanilla Ice Cream which is equally bad. Hence I was quite hesitant when the owner recommended their Brownies for dessert but to my surprise, it was amazing. We tried out the Salted Caramel Brownie which was a perfect blend of taste and texture! Strongly recommended! Another dessert we tried out was their Pink Ladoo which was equally good.

Overall, I feel Morselo is a good place to order food from or for takeaways, however when it comes to dining here, I find the ambiance quite average and I’m not a big fan of eating out of plastic containers with plastic cutlery when at a restaurant. However on the positive side, the food is hot, you get to speak to their cheerful owner and listen to his interesting stories about the dishes and last but not least, they do serve a cup of tea on the house each time they prepare a batch!

Dishkiyaaon!!!

Dishkiyaaon! yes that’s the name of this quirky restaurant located on the ground floor of the beautiful Capital Building at BKC. The ambiance lives up to its name with its unique decor, hilarious coasters and so does the food with its Bollywood inspired filmy names.

I visited this place for lunch on a rainy day and it was quite a pleasant experience. We began with a round of soup that was served with lightly toasted bread. We tried out the Yanna Rascalla which was a combination of Minestrone and Rasam, not sure about the minestrone but this soup did taste like Rasam with tiny chunks of Chicken in it, definitely not my favorite dish! However the second soup, Shorba Di Fungi, a Creamy Mushroom soup with Chicken was simply delicious. Thick, creamy and packed with that delicious mushroom flavor, it went well with the garlic toasted bread. Must try if you like Mushroom soups.

Chicken Tikka and Khari maybe two things you never thought of having together but this restaurant seems to like crazy combinations and they definitely got this one right. Their Chicken Tikka Khari was the best dish of the day, tender juicy chicken and soft melt in your mouth Khari, strongly recommended!

IMG_0948

The other appetizers we tried out were Kerela Fish and Chips and Prawns Tandoori Pesto, while the fish was nice and crisp on the outside, it could have been more juicy or moist on the inside, however I did like the spices used on the crust. The prawns were just poor in taste and quality, not recommended!

For mains we ordered Potli Fish and Bhuna Green Goulash and some roti to go along with it. Both dishes were so delicious, nothing was left behind. The Potli Fish comes wrapped in Parchment Paper and served with mildly spiced Masala Rice. The flavors of lemon butter and thyme were mildly evident but if there was a drizzle of lemon butter sauce over the rice, it would have brought this dish to life. The Lamb Goulash Gravy on the other hand was packed with flavor and quite spicy. Perfect! Went well with the Multi-grain Roti served along with it.

Finally for desserts we had an overload of chocolate as we tried out their Chocolate Volcano and Old Monk Chocolate Mouse. Both were equally delicious and chocolaty!

The drinks we tried out were Coffee Sangria – a non alcoholic mix of coffee and orange flavors – not my favorite drink. Paan Banaras wala – Whiskey with Paan and Coconut syrup – unique taste, what I liked most was the flakes of beetle-nut floating on top and cooling your lips each time they touched. Banaras to Bombay – Another delicious blend of Thandai and Dark rum, sadly only 1/3 of the glass was filled. Chai Biscuit Cocktail – Rum and Chai, tastes as bad as it sounds. Last but not lease – A Classic Old Fashioned, the best drink of the lot and a clear example that Classic Cocktails should not be messed with!

Overall we had a lovely time at this restaurant, a great place to unwind and dine with friends!

The Newly Opened Hungry Head at Ghatkopar has some of the Best Maggi Creations.

My experiments with Maggi started by adding knobs of butter and slices of cheese to it, later it moved on to adding caramelized onions, fried paneer or chicken to it. However, this place takes their maggi preparations to a whole new level.

Located a stones throw away from my Alma Mater, Somaiya, this place is bound to attract several college going students alone with the locals of Ghatkopar. After multiple visits to their Powai outlet, I was curious to see what the second outlet of Hungry Head had in store.

IMG_4964

We began by trying out some of their basic Maggi Preparations and went for the Picadilla Maggi, Thai Curry Maggi, Aglio E Olio Maggi and my favorite fro their previous outlet –  Khow Suey Maggi. While the other three are still delicious, their Khow Suey Maggi still remains my favorite dish.

To beat the summer heat along with the heat from the spices, we decided to try out some of their drinks and ended up trying almost all of them. Starting off with their Thick Shakes – Chocolate, Mast Melon, Snickers, Shahi Mango and Berry Delight, then to a few Coolers, Mojitos and Iced Teas. While we loved all of them, their Thick Shakes were the best of the lot.

Next we moved on to more complex maggi preparations, their Maggi Sizzler and Oye Punjabi Magizza. Both of which seem nice but failed to impress, especially the sizzler, more show than flavor or taste.

We then moved on to their specialty fries and blooming bread, which is their version of a Pull-apart bread. Chili Cheese Garlic and Honey Chili were the toppings we went for, while the toppings were delicious, the quality of fries were very average, the dishes could have been much better. The Blooming Bread is another dish that I dislike as it is more gimmick and less taste, while the first few bites are good, the rest of the dish is plain dry bread. Not recommended by me even though many people may like it.

Finally for desserts we had their Sizzling Brownie and Chocolava Cake with Ice Cream, both of them were quite nice but the Chocolava was a hint better. We ended with a round of Paan, Coffee and Bubble Gum shots. The paan and coffee are quite nice but the bubble gum could be avoided.

Overall this place is worth a try for maggi lovers, after all it is an iconic product that you can’t avoid whether you love it, hate it or even ban it! Maggi is here to stay!

Candlelight Dinner under the Trees @ Rainforest, R City

Did you ever dream of dining amidst the trees but at the same time you like gourmet food and exotic cocktails? Then Rainforest is your dream come true as it blends the best of both worlds. Located on the top floor of the every bustling R City Mall in Ghatkopar, stepping into this restaurant makes you forget all the chaos and a while later you even start to forget that you in the suburbs of Mumbai, let alone the top floor of a crowded Mall.

They serve a wide variety of dishes from Indian, Italian, Asian and they even have special menus for Kids and Seafood lovers. Being a seafood lover, we started off by trying out their Seafood Specials – Wasabi Shrimp with Mango Chutney and Grilled Fish with Crispy Spinach. Both dishes were delicious, however the mango chutney did overpower the wasabi and shrimp flavors, while the soft grilled fish was perfectly matched with the crisp spinach. The best dish of the day.

Impressed by the fish, we gave it another try, we ordered Basa in Teriyaki Sauce along with Lamb Chilly. Again the dishes were quite nice but the mild basa flavor gets overpowered by the strong teriyaki sauce as well as the soft texture ruined by the cornflour coating. The Lamb however was spot on with amazing flavor and most importantly the meat was still tender and soft. Worth a try! We also tried out their Jalapeno and Cheese Poppers which were nice and served with mouth-watering sauce.

For mains we decided to go for a chicken dish, we ordered a Chicken in Lemon Coriander Sauce and some Veg Fortune Rice to go along with it. Both dishes had mild and unique flavors that complimented each other well. The chicken too was nice and tender.

And finally for deserts, we tried out their Bailey’s Special which was made up of 3 scoops of Ice cream – Chocolate, Vanilla and Orange, topped of with loads of Baileys Irish Cream Liqueur that transformed this simple dessert into something heavenly and yes..very tipsy. However I do wish they replaced the orange flavored ice cream with something milder, maybe butterscotch.

IMG_4945

Speaking of tipsy, the cocktails we tried out were the Long Island Ice Tea, Secret Forrest, Shanghai Sunset and Pinacolada, which was favorite that night.

Overall, we had an amazing experience and this is definitely a place that you should try out.

Live by Night, Andheri West.

Lokhandwala’s newest hangout place, Live By Night or LBN as they call it is an amazing place to unwind and relax. The ambiance is warm and cosy and the service too is quite nice. My experience here was good and I would surely recommend to anyone looking for a place to hang out and that serves good food as well.

Speaking of food, this place serves up amazing finger food to accompany those cocktails and lots of main courses for those looking for a proper dinner. We started with a round of Peking Chicken Dim-sums and Stir Fried Prawn Baos. The Dim-sums were heavenly and dipping sauce served along with it was to die for, sadly they ran out of dim-sums when we decided to go for another round. The Baos were quite impressive as well. Soft and Tender buns and a Sweet and Spicy Prawn Filling. Delicious!

The other appetizers we had were Buffalo Wings, Chicken Cheese Balls, Black Pepper Garlic Prawns and Spicy Grilled King Prawns. I loved them all but in rare case, the chicken dishes here tasted better than the prawns.

Lastly before mains, we tried out some of their Asian food, we went for Malaysian Chicken Satay, Japanese Tuna Teriyaki and Salmon Maki Rolls. While the Teriyaki was delicious, the sushi was quite disappointing and the only bad dish of the day. The Chicken Satay was the best of the three and definitely worth a try.

For mains we ordered my all time favorite Burmese Khow Suey and it was amazing. Rich, thick and aromatic gravy served with tender noodles and juicy chunks of chicken. They also serve additional spices and condiments with the dish to make the flavor as per your liking. Strongly Recommended again.

The drinks here were at par with the food, we tried out a couple of Classic Cocktails as well as their Live by Night Special Cocktails. Some of them were Classic Martini, Chocolate Orange Martini, Black Current Mojito, Choco Channel Kitkat, Rush Me Up, Carribean Beach Cooler, Clasic Whiskey Sour and Live by night Whiskey Sour.

Since this place didn’t have any desserts, we went for a round of Black and White Russians which were exceptionally good and the best cocktails of the day. Perfect ending to a wonderful evening!
